Turning complex telco infrastructure into a 90 second user journey

Partnering with Vodafone Group to launch a global new Travel eSIM platform that brings seamless, borderless mobile connectivity to travellers worldwide, covering 200+ destinations.

  • 700+ partner networks integrated
  • ~90 sec average activation time
  • 5G available in 98 countries

The challenge

Maintaining connectivity abroad has always been harder than it should be. Expensive roaming charges, the hassle of swapping SIM cards on arrival, or depending on public Wi-Fi. The friction was familiar and largely accepted as inevitable.

International roaming has long been a solved problem in theory and a frustrating one in practice. The infrastructure exists. The networks are there. But for travellers without a local contract, international connectivity has historically required accepting steep daily roaming charges, surrendering their primary number to a local plan, or both. Vodafone’s own research found that 84% of travellers would use a better alternative if one existed.

Τhe solution was to build a carrier-agnostic Travel eSIM platform – one that works virtually anywhere across a vast network of operators, handles real-time network switching, processes payments in multiple currencies, and delivers an activated eSIM profile to a device in under 90 seconds.

The Solution

Netcompany acted as the strategic technology partner for the project, architecting and delivering the Vodafone Travel eSIM platform end-to-end: a dual-channel web and native mobile app solution integrated with Vodafone’s global provisioning backend.

The platform’s core engineering challenge was connectivity orchestration at scale. The system handles real-time network selection across a global mesh of partner networks, including 5G infrastructure in 98 countries, routing each user automatically to the best available local provider for their destination. The provisioning pipeline manages the full eSIM lifecycle: plan selection, payment processing, QR code generation, profile download, and on-arrival activation — all without manual intervention and at lightning speed.

This architectural independence was a deliberate commercial and technical decision. By building the platform independently of Vodafone’s existing subscriber systems, Netcompany is leveraging the ‘Telco-as-a-Service’ model: connectivity sold as an on-demand digital product, open to any traveller or partner on any network, with no long-term obligations. Users retain their original SIM, and with it their phone number, running the Vodafone eSIM in parallel purely for data.

»The Travel eSIM platform we developed for Vodafone Group provides a simple, secure, and seamless way for travellers to stay connected worldwide. It is a strong example of how technology can remove barriers and create a smoother, easier experience wherever you are.«

The Results

The platform launched successfully to a global audience, extending Vodafone’s Travel eSIM service to over 200 destinations across 700+ networks worldwide. It represents one of the broadest high-speed travel connectivity offerings of any comparable service currently available.

The more significant outcome is structural. By operating as an open platform available to any traveller on any network, Vodafone has moved from a contract-based operator model to a digital travel platform, capturing a global addressable market that was previously beyond reach.

»Launching the Travel eSIM platform has been a major step forward in delivering seamless, borderless connectivity to our customers. Working with Netcompany allowed us to move from concept to global rollout at speed, without compromising on user experience or reliability.«
