Open letter to all Europeans, April 23rd.

Europeans,
On April 22nd, we illuminated the Statue of Liberty in Paris with the message: “Stand Tall Europe”. Once a gift symbolising the transatlantic alliance and shared ideals of the West, the statue now stands as a reminder of a fellowship through centuries that is put under heavy pressure.
Our modern societies are based on the very same principles of freedom and democracy. They have been guiding our decisions and shaping our lives.
In these historically uncertain times, Europe must stand tall and act as a beacon of strength, unity, and resilience.
We must stand united in our commitment to these values and fight for them each and every day.
The battleground and the weapons are very much digital. Today, in everything we say, and in everything we do, technology plays a crucial role.
It lies at the heart of our wealth creation, drives our competitiveness, and sits at the very center of how we communicate, learn, and develop as societies.
From social media to cloud infrastructure, from applications to algorithms, we are dependent on technologies developed elsewhere, by actors who may not share our values.
This places our security, sovereignty, and democracy at risk.
We must take responsibility. Our ability to come together, to innovate, and to solve challenges collectively demonstrates the strength of our unity.
We must use this strength and bring our data home, ensure that our societies rely on trusted applications and infrastructure, and place digital rights, freedom, and democracy at the core of who we are, and what we stand for.
This is why we are calling for European solutions—built by European companies, run on European data, and accountable to European citizens. Because we believe in a digital future where Europe owns its foundation, protects its citizens, and leads with integrity.
As the torch of Lady Liberty once gave light and hope to those fighting oppression and seeking freedom and opportunity, she now leads the way for all of us again.
