How a cloud data platform accelerated Fazer’s sweet success

Cloud innovation gives Fazer the ingredients to scale their data-driven business and empower every unit with fast, reliable insights.

The challenge

Relying on data is an essential part of running a modern business. However, when you accumulate so much data that it becomes unwieldy and slows down your operations, action is needed.

Fazer, a heavyweight corporation in the Nordic food industry, realised that their vast amount of data across multiple business units was reducing scalability, hindering innovation, and slowing data processes and loading times.

Business units depended on a central IT function to access and utilise data, which limited agility and innovation. As Fazer prepared for its largest-ever investment, a huge factory designed to take the company to new heights 100 kilometres outside the capital, Helsinki, they needed an advanced data platform capable of scaling and providing real-time insights across regions.

Fazer needed better visibility into their data and more modern reporting tooling. They required timely, reliable insights and self‑service analytics to run daily operations effectively and prepare for future AI‑driven initiatives.

Without a modern solution, their growing data needs threatened to strike a sour note in their recipe for success.

»Netcompany played a key role in supporting Fazer’s successful migration from legacy data storage and analytics solutions to a modern, cloud‑based architecture«

Frans Westerlund, CIO, Fazer

The solution

We needed to tackle our largest private data migration projects to date without a local office or on-site presence. To do so, we began by mapping which data assets should be migrated, assessing their complexity, and estimating timelines with precision.

With our PULSE platform as the underlying infrastructure, we developed tools to translate legacy database models into the new cloud architecture, automating code conversion for 84% of the system and significantly accelerating deployment.

With a modern data and analytics platform built in Snowflake, we successfully migrated 5,000 complex analytics objects.

Our unique approach incorporated automated quality assurance, carrying out up to a million tests during each migration cycle. As a result, we achieved zero defects and delivered a robust, scalable platform.

»We have achieved zero bugs and have tested every single detail with unprecedented precision. This is one of the most thoroughly tested solutions we have ever delivered, ensuring that Fazer’s data platform is as reliable as possible from day one,« says Christian Morten Prip, Principal at Netcompany.

As part of the migration, we built five accelerators and refined platform components that not only made this delivery more efficient but will also support Fazer’s ongoing development and can be reused to accelerate similar data projects in future.

Frans Westerlund, CIO at Fazer, highlights our impact on the journey towards a modern data and analytics platform.

The result

After two and a half years of close collaboration, the new cloud data platform is now live.

Across the entire organisation, Fazer’s business units can access reliable data at dramatically improved speeds, as loading times have been reduced to an impressive one third of the original.

At the same time, storage requirements have been reduced to just 25 percent of their previous size, freeing up resources for future growth.

Looking ahead, Fazer expects to achieve significant savings on maintenance costs thanks to the streamlined platform.

With our solution, Fazer is now ready to embrace new opportunities in AI-driven initiatives and enjoy the full flavour of modern and agile data operations.
