Inspiring the next generation of girls in tech

Inspiring the next generation of girls in tech

As frontrunners of responsible digitalisation, we believe in the importance of reducing the gender gap within the tech industry. That’s why we were thrilled to participate in this year’s Girl Tech Fest in Oslo. An initiative that aims to spark young girls’ interest in technology and science through hands-on learning and mentorship from female role models.

Eight of our consultants joined the event, guiding girls around age 10 as they explored Netcompany’s own Roblox universe, GlamPet High.

Netcompany joins Girl Tech Fest

This year marks Netcompany’s debut as a national partner for Girl Tech Fest. At the Netcompany station, the girls dove into the world of GlamPet High, our Roblox universe developed in collaboration with Google and Lundbeck. Here, they had the chance to adopt and personalise their own pets while using coding skills to tackle puzzles and uncover hidden secrets, blending creativity with technology in an engaging way.

Eight Netcompany consultants were there to guide and inspire them every step of the way. Their mission was not only to show the girls the ins and outs of GlamPet High but also to demonstrate that technology is for everyone, proving that anyone can explore and thrive in the tech world.

Benedicte Kaltoft was one of this year’s mentors. She found it truly enjoyable to spend a whole day with young girls, serving as an example that technology is not just for boys.

»It was incredibly rewarding to see the joy of accomplishment the girls experienced when they saw everything, they managed to create in Roblox. The engagement the girls showed during the workshop and the joy they had when they were finished was amazing to witness.«

Inspiring Girls to Discover the Fun Side of Tech and STEM

Benedicte studied Computer Science at NTNU and started as a consultant at Netcompany in 2023. Today, she works on developing a case management system for child welfare employees in municipalities across Norway. As a woman in a male-dominated profession, she believes that Girl Tech Fest is important because it provides young girls with a space to explore technology without feeling pressured and allows them to be in an environment with other girls who share the same interests.

We need more role models in the industry

Partner in Netcompany Anette Ottar believes that initiatives like Girl Tech Fest are essential for promoting a diverse tech industry and that the business sector has an important responsibility in this. She emphasises that creating inclusive environments where young girls feel encouraged to explore technology is crucial for building a tech industry that truly reflects and serves everyone.

»Personally, it is important to me that young women not only choose tech but also stay and grow in the field. Women often leave the industry at certain career stages, and we all have a responsibility to make tech a space where everyone feels they belong and can succeed, from young girls starting out in tech to senior managers.«
